Karen McFarlane, MD, FACS, FICS, FASMBS, Dip ABOM

Dr. Karen McFarlane went to the City College of New York in New York City and enrolled in their Scholar’s program where she did biochemistry research including research for the human genome project at University North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She went on to University of Iowa for medical school where she took interest in general surgery and plastic surgery. She completed her general surgery residency training at St John’s Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan. At her program, she became the chief surgical resident and won best teaching awards.

She achieved competitive fellowships in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery in Crosby, Michigan for Minnesota Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIMIS).  She also trained at Dartmouth Medical Center for her plastic surgery training. She is double board certified with the American Board of Surgery and Board of Obesity Medicine. She is a member of multiple societies including Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and Fellow of International College of Surgeons. She has returned to Michigan serving past roles as chief of surgery including trauma and bariatric directorships at her local hospitals.

Her interests include hernias, bariatric surgery, anti-reflux operations including colorectal surgery. She is one of few general surgeons in Michigan who has completed over 2000 robotic cases. She also teaches surgeons about robotic surgery techniques and gives multiple patient-oriented seminars for bariatric surgery including speaking engagements for physicians.
