An inguinal hernia is not too difficult to spot in most cases. It is more common in males, both children and adults. It does not go away on its own, so eventually you need to have it repaired. Look for these 5 signs you may have an inguinal hernia.
Where to Look
If you have an inguinal hernia it will protrude from the groin area. It may appear on the left or right of your pubic bone or both. There may or may not be pain. In fact, some people can have an inguinal hernia for a while and not realize it. That’s why we are providing some additional obvious signs.
The Bulge Under the Skin
Most hernias occur when tissue from one cavity bulges through a weak area in the muscle wall. Here, abdominal tissue bulges through an opening in the muscles of your lower abdominal wall.
An inguinal hernia occurs in the inguinal canal which is a passageway that runs down both sides of the pelvis to your sex organs. Think of it as a “groin” hernia.
They frequently get larger and can become dangerous if your intestines get trapped inside the bulge. If it loses its blood supply, it becomes a strangulated hernia. Emergency surgery is required if that occurs.
Changes in the Bulge
The bulge increases in size when you strain and disappears when you lie down. Coughing, lifting something heavy, straining during a bowel movement can all cause the hernia bulge to appear and you feel pressure and pain. It can increase in size when you stand up.
In a child, crying can cause the bulge to appear.
Painful to the Touch
It is possible to gently massage the bulge back inside, but it can be quite painful to the touch. You may have burning sensations along with the pain.
Swelling of the Scrotum
This occurs when the protruding intestine moves down into the scrotum.
When is it Time to See a Doctor
If any of these signs occur, call Dr. McFarlane immediately!
- If the bulge turns red, purple, or a dark color
- If you have nausea and a fever
- If you cannot move your bowels or pass gas
Don’t wait until your hernia requires emergency surgery. Have it repaired early when it is easier and without any complications.
